Going on a cruise has always been on my bucket list. I became a member of an organization called The Adventurous Babes Society. The organization had been started by a few women in my hometown of Wichita, Kansas just a few years before I joined. They were looking to form a group of women who could all do fun adventurous things together. I knew this was something I wanted to be apart of since drinking and partying, like other college students, wasn’t really my thing. I yearned for more life experiences that would allow me to grow as a person and experience life the way it was meant to be lived.
Now I know many people had the same concern I did; will I get sea sick? I do get motion sickness, so I wanted to make sure I could enjoy myself. There are medicines like Dramamine that help with motion sickness, however, a main side effect is drowsiness. There are also bracelets that you can wear to help with the sickness as well. The first day I was on the ship I could definitely feel the ship moving. The first day was really the only day it was obvious. The other days there were moments that I could feel the boat shift, but not enough to make me sick.
The best thing about a cruise is that there is something for everyone. You can lay out by the pool, relax at the spa, go to a show, listen to live music, go gambling in the casino, eat the buffet, or join in on all of the random activities they have scheduled throughout the day. The food is almost as good as the service. The crew and staff are unbelievable. They really do go above and beyond to make sure you are having a good time and are accommodated properly. Don’t forget to take advantage of all of the people you are around. Although I was with about 50 women, I still met some really cool people who I still talk to today.
Once we landed in Cozumel I set off on my excursion. It has always been on my bucket list to swim with dolphins. Not only did I get to cross going on a cruise off my list, but also swimming with dolphins. I’ve never seen water so clear and blue. When I was in with the dolphins, I would look down and see little exotic fish swimming around me. Now that was a view I could get used to. After the dolphins, I got to swim with manatees. I had no idea what these animals were at the time, so I didn’t know what to expect. Although they were big, they were gentle as can be and ate right out of our hands. Next, some of the babes and I wandering into a sea lion show. This was an extra special experience, because I got called out of the crowd to go down and interact with the sea lion. I’ll never forget kissing that slightly wet little mouth. What a day!
I got to spend time walking around Cozumel, hitting up the shops. I can see why it is such a popular cruise destination. Now, whatever you do, DO NOT BE LATE. If you lose track of time, the ship will leave without you and it is up to you to find yourself a way to get home. Out of everything: the views, food, people, experiences, weather… my favorite thing about the cruise was that I didn’t use my phone. It was so liberating to be disconnected from the world. I was able to be 100 percent present during the whole trip. There were no distractions. I was able to take everything in and truly appreciate life in a way I hadn’t before.
